General

What it is, who it's for, how fast it's live.

What is a virtual landline number?
A virtual landline number is an ordinary New Zealand landline number that exists on a carrier's network instead of a copper line. When someone dials it, the call is forwarded to the mobile you already have. Callers see a landline number; you answer on your normal phone. Read more
How quickly is my number live?
Your number goes live once an address in New Zealand is checked, usually within a working day — we email you the moment it does. New Zealand numbering rules mean the number can't go live before that check clears. Read more
Do I need an app or a new phone?
No. Calls to your landline number ring the mobile you already have, through your normal phone app. It works without internet because by the time the call reaches you it's an ordinary phone call. There is nothing to install. Read more
Does the number have to match where I live?
No. Numbers aren't tied to where you live any more. Most customers pick the New Zealand town their customers are in. Read more
Who is Landline for Mobile for?
Tradies, Hairdressers and beauty, Consultants and coaches, Online sellers, Real estate agents, Remote teams — anyone who wants a real business number without a phone system, ringing the phone already in their pocket. It's built for one person or a small team; if you need five numbers and a "press 1 for sales" menu, tell us and we'll say honestly whether we're the right fit. Read more

Features

Everything that's included, and how it behaves.

What's included in the price?
Everything: the number, forwarding to your mobile, a business-call heads-up before you answer, voicemail to your email and a transcript after it, a welcome message and branded voicemail, working hours and holiday voicemail, a second mobile, the caller's number on your screen, WhatsApp Business on the number, and a 24/7 control panel. NZ$24.99 a month. Up to 120 minutes a month to a New Zealand mobile included, then 20c a minute. Every feature above is in that price, and so is call recording — off unless you switch it on, then kept 90 days. Making calls as your number will be a paid add-on when it arrives. Read more
What does the caller see and pay?
They see your landline number and pay their normal rate for calling that kind of number — usually included in their plan. Read more
What is the business-call heads-up?
A short announcement — "business call" — that you hear before the call connects, so you know it's a customer and answer accordingly rather than the way you'd answer a mate. It's on by default and can be switched off in your control panel. Read more
How does voicemail to email work?
If you don't answer within about 25 seconds, or it's outside your working hours, the caller hears your greeting and leaves a message. Within a minute the recording arrives in your inbox, with the caller's number, so you can ring back from your mobile. The transcript comes in a second email a little later, and appears with the message in your control panel — it's done by machine, so it isn't always perfect. Read more
Can I ring two phones at once?
Yes. Add a second mobile in your control panel and both ring; whoever answers first takes the call. Each mobile is verified by text message so calls can only go to phones you control. Read more
Are calls recorded?
Only if you switch it on. Recording is off when your number goes live. Turn on Record calls in your control panel, under Greetings & options, and from then on every answered call is recorded. Read more
Can I make calls from my landline number?
Not yet — Landline for Mobile is for receiving calls. An app add-on for making calls as your number is coming, at NZ$14.99 a month. Two things work today: withholding your mobile number when you ring back (your network has a prefix for it), and WhatsApp Business on your landline number, which lets you call and message customers as the business for free. Read more
How many minutes are included?
Up to 120 minutes a month to a New Zealand mobile included, then 20c a minute. Extra minutes are added to your next bill, and every call and its length is listed in your control panel. The fair use policy is one paragraph and it's on the site. Read more

Changing where calls go, hours, greetings, phones.

How do I change the mobile my calls go to?
In your control panel, under Where calls go, enter the new mobile. We text a code to it; once it's confirmed, calls switch immediately. Only numbers you've verified this way can ever receive your calls. Read more
How do I set working hours?
Control panel, Hours. Set the days and times you take calls, and a lunch break if you want one. The one thing that can be charged is forwarded minutes past the 120 included, at 20c a minute — the same rate as any other month — and they appear on your first bill. 120 minutes is about 17 minutes of answered calls every day of the trial. Transfer and porting

Bringing a number in, taking a number out.

Can I transfer my existing landline number?
Yes, and it's free. Tell us the number on the transfer page and we'll email a link to upload photo ID, proof of address and a recent bill. The same link shows where your transfer has got to. Transfers take two to four weeks; your old line keeps working until the switch. Once transferred it's NZ$24.99 a month, the same as any other number here. Read more

Troubleshooting

When something isn't working.

Calls aren't ringing my mobile
Check three things in this order: your mobile has signal and isn't on do-not-disturb; the control panel shows the right mobile and you're inside your working hours; the number hasn't been paused for a failed payment (you'd have an email). Then ring your own landline number from another phone. Still nothing? Contact us with the time of the call and we'll trace it. Read more
The voicemail email hasn't arrived
Check spam and promotions folders and add our address to your contacts. Voicemail messages are also in your control panel under Voicemail. If the caller hung up before the tone there's no message to send. Read more
I didn't get the verification text
Codes usually arrive within seconds. Check the mobile number is typed correctly with no missing digit, that the phone can receive texts (some business SIMs block them), and wait a minute before requesting another. Five codes are allowed in 15 minutes. Read more
The caller ID shows the wrong number
By default you see the caller's number, so you can save it. If you'd rather see your own landline number on incoming calls — useful when you have several — switch it in the control panel under Where calls go. Read more
Call quality is poor
The forwarded leg is an ordinary call to your mobile, so quality usually depends on your mobile's signal. If it happens with good signal, note the time and the caller's number and contact us; we can see each call's path and fix routing. Read more
