Are calls recorded?

Only if you switch it on. Recording is off when your number goes live. Turn on Record calls in your control panel, under Greetings & options, and from then on every answered call is recorded.

A recording appears beside its call under Recent calls in your control panel, where you can play it or save a copy of it, or delete it. When you delete one we delete our carrier's copy of the audio first and then our own record of it; if the carrier ever refuses, we chase it. We keep recordings for 90 days and then delete them for you the same way. Nothing is emailed — a recording of every call would fill your inbox — and voicemail is a separate thing that carries on working either way.

Where you record calls you are the one recording them, and complying with the law that applies to you is your responsibility, not ours: that normally means having a clear reason to record and telling the people you are recording. The law differs from country to country: some allow a business to record its own calls once it has told the people on them, and some require everyone on the call to agree first. Someone you have recorded may ask you for a copy of the recording of their own voice, or ask you to delete it, and answering them is yours to do as well. If you are not sure what applies to your business, take your own advice — we hold the recordings for you and we cannot advise you on whether to make them. The simplest way to tell callers is a short welcome message, which you can set in the same part of your control panel; and if somebody does ask you for a copy of a recording of their own voice, you can save it from Recent calls and send it on.
