The tradie's guide to a business phone number

Why customers don't ring a random 021 for a quote, and how to fix it in two minutes without a second phone.

NZ$24.99 a monthUp to 120 minutes a month to a New Zealand mobile included, then 20c a minute.

Here's a thing every sparky, plumber and builder has noticed and few will say out loud: people ring the landline number first. Put a 09 and an 021 on the same flyer and the 09 gets the call for the quote. It's not fair — some of the best trades in the country run off a mobile — but a landline number reads as a business, and a mobile number reads as a bloke.

The old fix was a landline in a home office that nobody sat next to, an answerphone with a message from 2014, and a lot of missed jobs. The new fix is a landline number that rings the mobile that's already in your pocket. Customers see the 09 on the ute; you get the call on site.

Set-up is two minutes on your phone: pick the region, pick the number you like, tell us the mobile it should ring. It's NZ$24.99 a month, every feature included, and there's no contract because nobody should sign a contract for a phone number.

The features that matter to a tradie, in order: working hours, so calls after six go to voicemail instead of interrupting dinner; voicemail to email, and a transcript in a second email after it, so you can read a message on the job and ring back at smoko; the "business call" heads-up, so you don't answer a customer the way you'd answer your mate; and a second phone, so the apprentice or your partner can take calls when you're under a house.

One more: put the landline number on WhatsApp Business. It takes five minutes, costs nothing, and means customers can send you photos of the job on a number that isn't your personal one. Instructions are on our WhatsApp page.
